Brown University Crest

Founded in 1764, Brown University was the third college in New England and the seventh in America, welcoming students of all religious persuasions. A commitment to diversity and intellectual freedom remains a hallmark of the University today.

BrownĘs strength in multidisciplinary research and scholarship, combined with its world-class facilities and cutting-edge technology, makes the University a leader in the sciences as well as in the arts and humanities.  Still, while its facilities and programs have expanded enormously over the years, Brown has chosen to keep its enrollment relatively small: 5,800 undergraduates, 1,500 graduates, and 300 students in the Brown Medical School.

Brown Medical School is nationally known for its expertise in family medicine and primary care. It is one of the nation's youngest medical schools, having granted its first M.D. degrees in 1975. As the only medical school in the state of Rhode Island, Brown Medical School and its affiliated hospitals have been a catalyst for significant improvement in the quality of the state's health policy and services.

The University is situated on a historic residential hill overlooking downtown Providence, Rhode Island, a city of some 170,000 people.  A dynamic center of intellectual ideas and cultural events, Providence is a vibrant city with a strong sense of heritage.
